So growing up my family didn't really go "Camping." I mean we went trailer camping, but not camping, camping. When I was 17 we took a 3 week trip across the United States in a motor home.
We rented the motor home and the sales guy was good. He told us that travelling with the family in a motor home would bring us closer together and that we would meet lots of great people at the campgrounds and that the fellow motor homers would invite us in for cherry pie.
We never got any cherry pie unfortunately. And as I recall when we returned home none of us talked to each other for the next 2 weeks.
Some families shouldn't go on 3 week motor home trips together.
Probably most families.
Last month we went on a church campout and I helped set up the tent. Something that I am a novice at. I was surprised at how easy it was. And I said to myself, "Hey! We should go camping more often! This tent thing is super fun!"
So this month we had another church campout, this time it was training camp for scouts and the whole family was invited. I was extremely excited to get away from the incessant heat. We had a ball but it rained when it was time to put the tent away and then I said to myself, "Hmmm. Maybe we shouldn't go camping more often."
Or I need to make myself scarce when it is time to clean up.
"Oh sorry Don, I just need to go sit in the car and feed the baby. I can't help. Good luck with the muddy tarp"
Just kidding Don.
Chloe participated in some rocket launching. I knew we had a rocket scientist in the making. As a descendant of 2 brilliant minds, our daughter was sure to be a genious. Wait-how do you spell genoius again?
After our campout we stayed at our friend's cabin. We are sad, it is being sold this week and we will no longer have access to that little piece of paradise. Our friends Richard and Julie came up and we had dinner together and played games. They don't have any kids yet. I think we successfully convinced them not too. They were good sports to hang out with us and our put up with our sporadic conversations.
"So the other day.... PUT THAT DOWN CHLOE....we went to the grocery...CHLOE GET AWAY FROM THE DEAD MOUSE....wait what was I saying?"
Chloe was also introduced to a little something people call "rain." We have been told it is wet and comes from the sky. Turns out the descriptions were true. It was in fact wet and did come from the sky. And she finally got to use her "burella."
And now to my favorite story of the trip. On the way up, we stopped in Payson for dinner. Don made my life and said we should stop at the local Chinese Buffet. Hooray! Every time we go through Payson I tell Don that my family used to eat there as we were travelling through on family trips.
So we get out and there is Chinese woman running the show and she is very, very, VERY friendly, as I find most Chinese people at Chinese restaurants are.
She looks at my baby who was dressed in purple (note to self:purple tends to be a gender confusing color. Too close to blue. Stick to pink.)
and says, "Is a boy, righ?"
And I said, "No, actually a girl."
And she said, "Oh...oh...he have big head! Very smart!"
Um, thank you?
The best memory of the trip was Chloe walking around in a circle and making Macie laugh hysterically. That was the first time I have heard Macie laugh like that. It was pure joy.
Chinese buffet+funny lady+Macie and Chloe laughing+Don= Best night I have had in a long while.
As we left the restaurant, Don said, "Well I could say that is either the best chinese buffet I've ever had in Payson...or the worst Chinese buffet in Phoenix."
Touche.
